KNOW BEFORE VISITING
When you're getting ready for your dream Cozumel vacation, here are some things on your trip to Mexico to keep in mind when experiencing this beautiful island:
Entry Requirements - You need a passport on your trip to Mexico, plus a tourism card (or FMM), issued at any Mexican consulate, border-crossing point, Mexican tourism office or directly from your airline. Language - Spanish is the official language of Mexico and is spoken everywhere in Cozumel. However, with tourism, English is also widely spoken and non-Spanish speakers will have no problem. You may also hear some locals speaking Maya, the ancient native language. Time - Cozumel, Mexico is Eastern Standard Time (EST). Money - The Mexican peso is the local currency. Some major Cozumel hotels and resorts in the northern and southern hotel zones also have ATMs. It's recommended to use bank-affiliated ATMs and withdraw only pesos since independent ATMs offering U.S. dollars charge exorbitant fees. Credit cards are widely accepted, but ask first as not all merchants accept them. Weather - The average yearly temperate is about 80°F (27°C). Spring is optimal for a Cozumel vacation with warm and dry weather, while summer is hot and humid. June through October is the rainy season. Water - As in most Mexico vacation spots, it's advised not to drink Cozumel's tap water. Buy bottled water and avoid getting ice in your drinks at local restaurants. Transportation - Buses are reliable, abundant and inexpensive ways to get to Cozumel attractions. Taxis aren't that expensive, but more than buses. Negotiate the price of your fare with the driver before entering the cab. Dress - You'll find a laid-back atmosphere with very few dress codes. You won't need any dressy clothes, unless perhaps some fine-dining restaurant at one of the upscale resorts in Cozumel. Safety - Cozumel, Mexico, is a very safe island. Walking around at night is common and safe and many people are out. Normal safety precautions are all that's necessary. However, as with any popular tourist destination, Cozumel has its share of pickpockets, so be careful.
Embrace your dream Cozumel vacation, anytime. That's because there's not a bad time of year to visit with weather that doesn't change drastically throughout the year. The warm, sunny climate is ideal for Cozumel activities. Most days are warmer with the average yearly temperature about 80°F (27°C) and high humidity. August is the hottest month, averaging 95°F (35°C) during the day and 80°F (27°C) at night. The ocean breeze helps moderate the temps, making it feel more comfortable. Rainy season is late summer to mid-fall, when hurricanes can occur. Winter and the spring are ideal; warm with little rainfall and cool evenings. Temperatures range between 69°F to 82°F (21°C - 28°C).
