Historic Sites

Second only to Monte Alban in importance, Mitla is a ceremonial center known as the "Place of the Dead" in Nahuatl, or "Resting Place" in Zapotec. It was built in 100 BC by the Zapotecs and is known for its richly decorated walls, halls and interiors covered with intricate mosaic fretwork.
